A fix to the MovableType spam vulnerability was posted today. We have replaced every occurrence of mt-send-entry.cgi on our servers with the fixed version. We have also removed the system-wide block on the file as the newer copies should be more secure. All new installations of MT will have the fix in place by default. It appears as if MovableType has a spam vulnerability that has begun to be actively exploited by spammers. To keep the vulnerability from being a real problem we have denied access to the culprit, mt-send-entry.cgi, across all of our servers. Until a proper patch is designed we will be keeping the blocks in place. In general this action will affect a very small number (<1% we gather) of MovableType users.

Storm: Hard Drive Failure

This morning at approximately 4AM we experienced a hard drive failure on our new server, Storm. As it is usually the case with hardware related failures we had no warning of this. Our team did. however, manage to restore all data from our backups within two hours. We have spent the remainder of this morning tying up all loose ends.

The good news is that since we backup daily we were able to save everything from our Wednesday backup. The bad news is that for most clients this data is about 12 hours old. While we apologize for the inconvenience we are pleased to note that our backup routines work exactly as designed.

The drive was replaced with a brand new drive and everything else appears to be operating normally. If you have a question please do not hesitate to contact us via the helpdesk. Once again I apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their continued support and understanding.

3. Turn SMTP authentication on. Use the same username and password as your incoming mail server. Without SMTP authentication SMTP will not work.

To use FTP over SSL:
Note: Your client must support FTP over explicit SSL (TLS). Most modern clients, including SmartFTP, do.
